Literacy

 



Trinity Catholic Primary School offers an engaging Literacy program which reflects the current Victorian Curriculum.  

We embrace Melbourne University’s Clinical Teaching Cycle where teachers assess the students learning, plan and personalise the learning according to the pre-assessment, explicitly teach students at their point of need, evaluate the students learning, reflect on teaching practice and the effectiveness of their teaching, and assess student growth and progress.

Students are actively engaged in two hours of literacy each day. During this time students are involved in reading, writing and speaking and listening learning activities at their point of need, and skills are explicitly taught. The students learning is structured in a variety of ways.

The children at Trinity Catholic School mainly learn in small targeted focus groups, however they also participate in whole class learning, or one to one instruction with the classroom teacher or learning support officer, as needed. Teachers monitor students learning in an ongoing way and this formative assessment enables teachers to plan for future learning.

Learning Sprints is a process we adopt across the school in Literacy, which enables teachers to target student learning needs and strives to improve teacher practice.
Students are given ongoing feedback about their learning. One example of this is through the writing rubrics students use to track their learning and identify next steps with their writing.

At Trinity Catholic School we use a variety of resources such as Essential Assessment and Lexiles to name a few, and a variety of assessment tools  to plan for teaching and learning and the teachers are involved in ongoing professional learning so that they are up to date with current research and best practice in the teaching of literacy.

Digital technologies are embedded throughout the literacy learning activities as outlined in the Victorian Curriculum.

Parents are encouraged to be part of the literacy learning by helping out in the classrooms during literacy time. At Trinity Catholic school we encourage and value the role that parents play in the students learning.

Home reading is promoted and students 
borrow daily from the classroom leveled readers as well as the lexiled books from the library. Students may also be required to complete comprehension tasks related to their home reading. This may be completed online at home. Home learning activities relate to the current learning in the classroom related to reading, writing listening and speaking. All parents have access to Google Classroom and Seesaw to be able to access student learning in literacy.

INTERVENTION

Trinity Catholic Primary School is focussed on ensuring that all students achieve growth.
For those students who are experiencing difficulty in reading, writing and/or speaking and listening

Intervention may occur

  • In the classroom with the class teacher 1:1 or in small targeted groups
  • During Reading Recovery for Year 1 students who have not meet standard
  • With our highly skilled Learning Support Officers who undertake 1:1 or small group sessions both in and out of the classroom.
